The guppy fish

The guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is also known as “the million fish”. It is the most popular freshwater aquarium fish species in the world. If you have just discovered the guppy or you want to know more about it before getting started, this website is for you.

The guppy is a small tropical fish, females being no bigger than 4–6 centimetres long (1.6–2.4 inches) and males about 2.5–3.5 centimetres long (1.0–1.4 inches). They are livebearers (don’t lay eggs but give birth to fries) and a mature female produces about 20-60 fries every month.

Guppies became very popular because of their infinite varieties of colors and patterns achievable through selective breeding. The happiest moments in the life of a guppy fancier are when the new guppies start to display colors at about 1 month of age.
